Dubbed the 5th major, The Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass is a favorite among pro golfers and fans alike. The final three hole stretch is one the toughest on the tour, while the famed 17th hole has “sunken” many dreams of winning this event. I’ve been fortunate enough to play this course, and I shot a 108. BUT! I pared the 17th hole and that’s all that mattered… to me. Let’s move into the guys who get paid to play this game. Token Tony and I sat down and did some research and here is what we like this week.
Odds courtesy of the LV Superbook Mobile App as of 5.9.2018
Justin Thomas 16/1 –
Always a solid bet lately as Thomas has had the hot hand recently (7 wins in his last 37 starts). He finished 3rd at Sawgrass in 2016, but did miss the cut last year so the caveats are there, but he should be able to handle the course well enough to be in contention come Sunday.
Rory McIlroy 14/1 –
Rory started his career playing poorly at TPC, missing 3 straight cuts. But McIlroy has turned it around with 3 top 10’s, so I look for another solid showing from Rory this weekend. He’s definitely a strong candidate to go wire-to-wire in this event so a crisp $25 on Rory is a safe value bet.
Louis Oosthuizen 50/1 –
Token Tony loves this guy! Mr. Schmaster’s himself, Louis Oosthuizen had a poor showing at the Wells Fargo Championship last week but did finish 3rd in New Orleans a few weeks ago and T12 at Augusta. At 50/1, he is a solid player who finished T2 in Ponte Vedra in 2017.
Si Woo Kim 80/1 –
Nobody has ever gone back to back on this track, but at 80/1 Kim obviously knows how to win here and is worth a little sprinkleage.
Charl Schwartzel 100/1 –
Schwartzel has not played well this season until just recently, with a T3 at Zurich and a T9 at the Wells Fargo last weekend. Schwartzel hasn’t had much success at Sawgrass but we’re hoping he can ride this wave of hot golf into a huge payday!
Justin Thomas (-105) over Jordan Spieth (-115)
Henrik Stenson (-120) over Sergio Garcia (+110)
